Campaign Manager - Campaign Manager (Silverlight)

Split Tool

The Split tool is a random sampling tool used on a Campaign track to split a campaign segment into a specified number of proportional or non-proportional sized groups.

Splitting allows you to break your audience into smaller segments.

Splits are not repeatable, but they provide a quick and easy way of performing dynamic sampling to create campaigns that are more targeted. For example, you can use them to identify the creative type that worked best when targeted to an age group or region.

When the track is processed, each group is automatically split into separate nodes of recipients. Each node can have different actions applied to them.

Note that the split will be performed every time the track polls the audience. If this is not the desired behavior, move recipients to other tracks once the initial split has been performed.

Creating proportional groups

When you split the segment into proportional groups, you specify what proportion of the segment will be allocated to each group.

  1. Ensure your campaign audience has been specified in the Audience tab.
  2. Drag the tool to the Track.

  3. Click the Add button to create your groups.
  4. Click into the Name field and enter the name of the group.
  5. The Proportional check box is checked by default, with value of '1'. The value specifies what proportion of the segment is allocated to the group.

The table below shows two examples of specifying proportional values to split records into groups:

Before processing: Specified groups: Specified Proportional values: After processing the 100 records are split as:
    100 records 3 groups (A, B, C) A = 1, B = 1, C = 1 A = 33, B = 33, C = 34
    100 records 3 groups (A, B, C) A = 1, B = 1, C = 2 A = 25, B = 25, C = 50
    Note:

if the recipients cannot be split into equal amounts, the last group contains any extra recipients, as shown in the screen shot below:

Creating non-proportional groups

When you split the segment into non-proportional groups, you specify the exact number of recipients that will be allocated to each group.

  1. Ensure your campaign audience has been specified in the Audience tab.
  2. Drag the tool to the Track.

  3. Click the Add button to create your groups.
  4. Click into the Name field and enter the name of the group.
  5. Clear the Proportional check box.
  6. Enter the number of recipients for each group in the Value field.

The table below shows two examples of specifying exact values to split records into groups:

Before processing: Specified groups: Specified values: After processing the 100 records are split as:
    100 records 3 groups (A, B, C) A = 20, B = 30, C = 60 A = 20, B = 30, C = 50
    100 records 3 groups (A, B, C) A = 20, B = 30, C = 40 A = 20, B = 30, C = 50

    Note:

The final group always contains the number of recipients that are remaining after the preceding groups have been created. Therefore the final group may contain more or less than the value you specify. You can see this in the screen shot below. Group 4 was specified to contain 88 recipients. After the split it only contains 77, as this was the remaining number after Groups 1, 2 and 3 were created:
